Common Questions

How much does a 200A panel upgrade cost in Southern California?
Most straightforward 100A-to-200A panel upgrades fall between $3,200 and $5,800, including permit fees and city inspection. Price varies with existing wiring condition, panel location, sub-panel additions, meter main relocation, and utility coordination requirements. We'll give you an exact written quote after the on-site assessment — no estimate-over-the-phone guesswork.
Do I really need a permit for electrical work?
Yes — any service change, new circuit, sub-panel, or major wiring alteration legally requires a city permit and inspection in California. Unpermitted work can void homeowner's insurance, cause problems during home sale, and create real safety hazards. We pull every permit required and handle all inspector coordination — it's included in our pricing.
Can you install an EV charger without a panel upgrade?
Often, yes. We run a proper load calculation first. If your existing 100A or 150A panel has available capacity, we can install a Level 2 charger directly. If you're maxed out, we'll discuss options: load-managed chargers (which intelligently throttle based on whole-home demand), a sub-panel, or a full service upgrade. We always recommend the most cost-effective safe option.
Which battery backup systems do you install?
We install Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase IQ Battery 5P/10, FranklinWH aPower, Savant Storage Power, and Generac PWRcell, among others. We'll recommend the right platform based on your backup goals, existing solar (if any), budget, and space constraints. All installations include interconnection permits and utility coordination.
How long does a typical panel upgrade take?
From signing the estimate to final inspection, expect 2 to 4 weeks. Most of that is permit processing and scheduling the utility disconnect. The actual work day is typically 6 to 10 hours, during which your power will be off. We coordinate everything — you only need to be home for the work day itself.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Blue Stream Electrical holds an active California C-10 Electrical Contractor license, general liability insurance, and workers' compensation coverage. We're happy to provide license numbers and certificates of insurance on request — always verify any contractor on the CSLB website before hiring.
Do you offer financing?
We can refer you to reputable third-party financing partners for larger projects (service upgrades, whole-home rewiring, battery systems). Terms vary based on credit. Ask about financing options when reviewing your quote.
What rebates are available for EV chargers or battery storage?
California utilities (SCE, SDG&E, LADWP) offer EV charger rebates from $250 to $1,500. The federal 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit applies to battery storage. California's SGIP program provides significant rebates for battery systems, especially in high-fire-threat districts. We'll point you to the right programs and provide all documentation needed for applications.
